Scheduling and Preparing for the NRCME National Certification Examination
To become a certified or recertified medical examiner with the DOT/FMCSA, you must take the in-person NRCME national exam, offered only by two authorized testing companies: PSI and Prometric. Both charge $80 for the exam and require that you schedule using your eligibility number, aka your 10-digit National Registry certification number, which was issued to you by the DOT.
To locate a testing center near you, open Google Maps and search for “PSI Testing” or “Prometric Testing.” Most testing centers are open six days a week.
Key Differences Between PSI and Prometric:
- PSI only accepts training certificates that are less than one year old.
- Prometric accepts training certificates that are up to three years old, aligning with the FMCSA’s three-year validity policy.
If your training certificate is over three years old, you will need to contact the FMCSA directly for assistance.
Exam Rescheduling Update:
If you do not pass the exam, you no longer have to wait 30 days to retake it. This applies to both initial and 10-year recertification exams. Once the FMCSA receives your failing notice from the testing company, your FMCSA account will be updated—a process that may take up to 7 days. You can reschedule your exam as soon as the update is complete.

What to Do When You Cannot Schedule the NRCME Exam
If you have completed your training and correctly uploaded your Certificate of Completion into your DOT account but still cannot schedule the exam, the FMCSA is likely experiencing a temporary backlog in credential verification.
Before escalating the issue, ensure you have:
- Uploaded your PDF Certificate of Completion into your DOT account.
- Manually entered your training provider’s name and address, and the accrediting organization's name.
- Checked the box confirming the training was completed online, not in-person.
- Waited at least 24 hours since completing all of the above steps.
If you still cannot schedule the exam:
Call the FMCSA between 9am and 5pm EST, Monday–Friday:
- Dial (617) 494-3003
- Press Option 2 at the first greeting, then press 6 at the second greeting to skip directly to a live agent.
- Email FMCSA at FMCTECHSUP@dot.gov requesting verification to schedule your NRCME exam.
- Attempt to schedule your exam at the end of each business day until your credentials have been verified and access is granted.
