The Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) recently made a change by removing the expiration date from Medical Examiner (ME) certificates. ME certificates now list the provider’s medical license number and the expiration date of the ME’s medical license.
Since MEs are only qualified to perform CMV examinations as long as they have a current medical license, which usually expire in 1-2 years, the FMCSA is seeking to make it clear that the ME is only qualified if their medical license is current. The expiration date of the ME’s National Registry certification is still listed elsewhere in the MEs National Registry portal, so MEs have that as a reference.
MEs are still required to list the results of CMV examinations and to indicate monthly if no examinations are performed in a given month. Additionally, MEs are required to update their National Registry profile at least quarterly. Click here to visit the national registry.
These changes continue to emphasize the importance of MEs logging in to their National Registry account at least monthly, and to update their information on file at least quarterly. Most of the 15,000 MEs that have recently been removed from the National Registry were removed because the MEs did not maintain and update current information on the National Registry website.
Additionally, the FMCSA has confirmed that all Medical Examiners must complete the 5-year refresher training during the fifth year of their 10-year certification cycle, regardless of whether they are in their first or second cycle. The content of the refresher training has remained unchanged since its original release. Providers can access the 5-year refresher training through their DOT account once available or download it directly here: 5 Year Refresher Training
